Very Merry Christmas

Well the Hughes house was VERY merry this Christmas. We were very blessed by Santa and family members with lots of STUFF...now I need to find room for all of our new stuff. Ugh! :) Thursday (Christmas Eve), Christopher worked half day while Mommy and the girls cleaned and made Grandma's Cinnamon buns for Christmas morning breakfast. Cinnamon buns are a tradition from my Dad's Mom (Grandma Corell) and my mom and I make them every year from scratch to eat on Christmas morning. They are DELICIOUS! :) Anyway, once Chris got home, it was time for dinner and off to the 5pm Candlelight Service we went. Katherine and Caroline were dressed in their "Christmas Princess Dresses" as Katherine calls them and were super duper cute. We met my grandparents at church and Katherine immediately spotted the Beckwith Family and went to sit with them...Mom and Dad just aren't cool enough. :) Caroline was an angel and slept through the entire service...Katherine on the other hand didn't understand why she couldn't go up on stage with her "friends." So, Chris and Katherine made a hasty exit just before the sermon and were outside playing soccer...in her Christmas dress and white tights... Caroline and I quickly exited the service after it was over as I figured that Katherine was throwing a fit waiting on us...definitely not the case since she was playing soccer and having a blast! HA! We all piled into the car and headed home so we could hit the sack so Santa could pay us a visit. Katherine was definitely excited about Christmas, but I don't think she truly understood what was going to happen the next day...but she will next year!

Christmas morning Katherine slept in to the blessed hour of 7am! Amazing! Merry Christmas to Mom and Dad for sure! Mom and Dad got dressed while Katherine waited patiently to go downstairs and see what Santa had brought. After we were dressed, Chris read us the story of Jesus birth from the Bible and we explained to Katherine that is the reason we celebrate Christmas, then it was off to see what goodies were in store for us!

Santa definitely out did himself this year! Katherine got all kinds of baby accessories (stroller, pac n play, entertainment mat, etc.) and a brand new PINK bike (is there any other color?). She got a lot of other things from Mom and Dad, but her favorite from us was a toy medical kit...in pink of course! Needless to say Chris and I have needed lots of shots since the medical kit was opened...not sure why she's obsessed with shots, but she certainly is! :)

We then enjoyed our delicious cinnamon buns and then Caroline conked out for a nap. After she woke up and we had all showered, we headed over to Grammie and Gray Gray's for another Christmas celebration and lunch with GiGi (Frances) and Joe Joe (my Grandaddy) and Sandi. Katherine got a new PINK (of course) Mustang convertible that is motorized from them...just what she needed! She had been eyeing the huge box for weeks and was convinced it was a blue dinosaur...not quite! :) Unfortunately the Mustang needed to charge the batteries for 18 hours, so we didn't get to take a spin in it until the next day...and Lord help us, I think she's going to be a speed demon as her favorite thing to do is stomp the gas and peel out in our driveway...LOOKOUT! :)

The rest of the weekend was pretty low key as we cleaned up from the Christmas celebrations and prepared for our trek North to Virginia for Christmas with the Hughes and Vail clans.

We definitely had a wonderful Christmas!!

Katherine's Christmas Program

We just got home from Katherine's Christmas program and it was adorable!! All three grades (toddlers, 3 year olds and VPK) sang a different set of songs and in the end they all came together to sing Happy Birthday to baby Jesus and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Very, very sweet. Katherine even got to blow out the candle on baby Jesus' birthday cake! She was VERY excited about that. Here are some pictures from the program. We didn't get a good one close up of Katherine as she basically tore around the reception trying to see and hug everyone. She's quite the social butterfly! :)
The whole preschool on stage. Katherine is in the front row, center...the only one standing...she was quite the ham!

First half of December

Well the Hughes have been busy little bees this month...imagine that? After Thanksgiving we had Christopher's 29th birthday. It was a very low key day of shopping and just hanging out around the house. The next week I had to bake 36 sugar cookies for Katherine's preschool class to decorate. Definitely wasn't on my original to do list as I have a ton of catch up work to complete for the shop and I still wasn't finished shopping for Christmas yet! YIKES! We managed to get the cookies made and to school in time for them to have a BLAST decorating. Katherine of course is my daughter and really didn't want the cookie...she MUCH preferred the icing! :)

That Friday Chris and I snuck away while Katherine was at school to go Christmas shopping for the girls. We managed to get but one thing on our list done and lunch eaten in an hour and a half...talk about speed shopping! :)

Chris had to work some last weekend so they girls and I played around the house and finished up some Christmas shopping for Daddy. The Army/Navy Game was on Saturday, so while Chris watched that I started wrapping Christmas gifts....I think I may still be wrapping at New Year's...aagghh!!! On Sunday I had the crazy idea (Thanks to Katie Freakley) that I should make hard candy this year to give as gifts to the many Christmas parties that we are invited to this year. So Monday, Katherine, Caroline and I buzzed around town on a hunt for flavoring oils for the candy. We found a very cute store with the oils in Palm Bay and the candy making expedition 2009 began.

On Tuesday and Wednesday I made 5 batches or over 10 POUNDS of hard candy. I think I may have gone a bit....OVERBOARD. But it was SO easy to make and a TON of fun. And as a bonus the house smelled WONDERFUL. :) I made cinnamon, peppermint, orange, lemon and grape candy and I must admit that it is very tasty. My favorite is the cinnamon....it's like eating a fireball...LOVE IT! :) So I now have plenty of gifts for the Christmas parties, teacher gifts, etc, etc, etc...and we will still probably be eating it for the next year. HA! :)

Also this week I had the chore of baking 2 batches of sugar cookies...hold that...star-shaped sugar cookies for Katherine's Christmas program which is today. SO Katherine and I baked, and baked, and baked, and baked, and baked. In the end I had 120 star shaped sugar cookies for her school and probably 60 more non-shaped sugar cookies for us to eat. I got so sick of cutting out shapes that I began just picking up the outside edges of the dough and plopping it on a cookie sheet. Hey, if we're the only ones eating them who cares what they look like as long as they taste good...right?! :) Katherine helped me decorate them yesterday and I must say they turned out pretty well...I should have taken a picture...oh well!

Today is Katherine's Christmas program at church and boy was she excited to put on her "Christmas princess dress." She is definitely a girly girl. I will post pictures from her program later today. She was the cutest thing going into school this morning. She ran up to Tyler (one of the twin boys in her class) and grabbed his hand and they walked into school together holding hands and grinning at each other. I wish I had a camera with me! It was the cutest thing!

Well I'm off to see her Christmas Program, so check back later for more pictures!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Thanksgiving from the Hughes Family!!! :) We have had a wonderful week! Monday and Tuesday were a bit crazy as Katherine was sick...AGAIN. Go figure! :) She woke up Monday morning covered in hives!!! The poor kid! We are not sure if it was the start of a new virus or if it was an allergic reaction to the amoxicilin (however you spell that!) that she had just finished. She did get a pretty bad cold and cough later in the week, so I'm hoping it was the virus and not an allergic reaction. The poor thing was pretty miserable all day on Monday, but after keeping Benadryll in her system for the entire day and a good nights sleep on Monday, she woke up Tuesday with no hives! YAY!

Tuesday the Hughes girls spent the day decorating and getting our Christmas trees up and ready to decorate! We LOVE Christmas around here!

Wednesday we baked and cleaned for most of the day. Since we have been sick for what seems like months now, the house was a disaster area! So after baking two pumpkin pies and one pecan pie we did a massive cleaning around the house. It was so nice to have a clean house that smelled like pumpkin! Yummy!!

Thursday we did a few things around the house before we headed over to Grammie and Gray Gray's (My parents) for Thanksgiving lunch. It was delicious!! Momma got to break in her new kitchen and we definitely enjoyed it! :) My grandparents (or GiGi and Joe Joe as Katherine calls them) joined us for lunch and later in the day Tim and Kristen came over for dessert! It was a ton of fun! We headed home for naps all around and then we had a light dinner and passed out for the night from food coma. :)

Friday was a busy day as CiCi and PaPa came to visit!! They arrived really late on Thursday night, so we didn't see them until Friday morning. We whipped up a pancake breakfast and all stuffed our faces! :) Katherine was SOO excited to see her CiCi and PaPa. That same morning the shuttle came home to Kennedy Space Center, so they were able to hear the Sonic Boom. A definite treat if you have never heard it before. Katherine was hilarious, as soon as the boom happened she came running into the living room (I was changing Caroline's diaper) and said "MOM, MOM, the shuttle, the shuttle!! Uncle Cory's coming on the shuttle!!!" hahahaha. She thinks everything that flies is Uncle Cory's. Ha! After the shuttle landed safely, the boys headed off to Orlando for the Motor Trend Car Show. The girls stayed home and played outside until it was nap time. The boys got home just in time for our Birthday Dinner celebration for Christopher! His birthday is Dec 6, but since his parents were in town, we celebrated a week early. So we all walked over to my parents house for dinner and cake! It was great! He got a lot of neat toys to play with and now we have an extra camera, so hopefully that means I will be able to take more pictures of the girls! :)

Saturday morning we all got up and got ready for a fun day...Caroline got baptized Saturday night! :) PaPa and Daddy took Katherine to Toys R Us that morning to replace the ball that Colby popped on Friday. So while they headed out to take on the crowds of shopping, CiCi, Caroline and I headed to the grocery store to restock the frig and pantry. We got back in time to fix a lunch of hamburgers on the grill before it was time for the girls to take a nap. The girls took a nap and the boys went to my parents house to watch the UVa vs. Va Tech game. I did not want to watch, I figured either way I lost. If UVa lost, that stinks. If UVa won, then I think it would give them a reason to keep the current coach...which stinks. SO it was a pretty stress-free year for me and that game. I didn't really care which way it went, although I think I preferred losing so that hopefully we can get a new coaching staff and win some games next year! :) We had a quick dinner of pizza before we all piled into the car and headed to church. Caroline was baptized at the Saturday night service. She was really cute, but as soon as the Pastor held her she started screaming...ugh. And as soon as he handed her back to me she stopped...Oy vey! I swear she is so attached to her Momma it is scary! We came home from church and crashed.

Nothing on the agenda for today, so hopefully we will just get to hang out with CiCi and PaPa before they have to head back to VA tomorrow. :(

Here are some pictures from last night. Enjoy!!

Beginning of November

Well my last post was of Halloween...and since then we have been...SICK. Imagine that?! :)

Poor Katherine has basically had a fever since the beginning of October, with a few days in between of no fever. ICK! The doctor finally broke down and put her on an antibiotic last Thursday in hopes that whatever she is fighting will finally get the heck out of her system for good! This nonsense has gone on WAY too long. Today was Katherine's first day back to school in what feels like forever. She was SOOOO excited to go back. :)

Last week was a ton of fun as I had a girls night out with the ladies from my couple's group. We all got our nails done at a local salon. SOO fun!!! Chris watched the girls and when I got home, both girls were sound asleep!! A+++ for Daddy!

Friday we finally managed to organize a dinner with our friends Shane and Brittany. We have been trying to get together with them for something like 4 months! Ridiculous! Anyway, we FINALLY managed to not have anyone deathly ill or some scheduling conflict, so they came over for dinner. Brittany is also Katherine's teacher at school...whom she ADORES. Everything we hear is "Mrs. Maze this and Mrs. Maze that." Shane is also the contemporary music director at church, so he comes in and sings songs with the kids on Wednesday mornings. So when Katherine found out that Mrs. Maze and Mr. Shane were coming over for dinner she just about burst from excitement! When the doorbell rang, she sprinted to the door to answer it "all by myself." Such a cutie!

Brittany is an awesome photographer, so she brought her camera along with her and took pictures of the girls while dinner was finishing cooking. Some of her shots are below. I SO wish I could take pictures 1/2 as good as she does! :) Of course Katherine refused to let me fix her hair, so she looks like she just stuck her hand in a light socket, but aside from that, the pictures are wonderful!! What's a mom to do?! :) Brittany is going to take our Christmas card pictures, which I am THRILLED about. :) Now...we just need to get the darn Christmas tree up, so that we can take the pictures! :)

This weekend was crazy. We went to dinner at our next door neighbor's house on Saturday night. It was really nice, but a bit hectic as Katherine was still running a fever. So, Mom, dad and I rotated watching her at home, while the rest of us were over at the neighbor's eating. We were pooped by the time we got home! :) (The neighbor's daughter was there and 8 months pregnant, so we didn't want to take a chance of getting her sick!) Sunday we had lunch at Grammie and Gray Gray's with GiGi and Joe Joe. It was a lot of fun as Katherine hasn't seen Gi GI and Joe Joe in weeks due to her illness. Then Sunday afternoon I had a 4 hour...yes I said 4 hour...chruch meeting. SO...Christopher was on his own...with both girls...for 4 1/2 hours! I was really worried that both girls would give him a fit, but when I got home, they were both happy as clams! Caroline apparently only cried for about 15 minutes and that was right before I got home, so she was getting tired. Amazing!! Again...A+++++ for Daddy!!

Today Katherine went back to school...FINALLY! :) YAY! She was thrilled to be back and ran into the classroom and immediately hugged Mrs. Maze. It was very cute.

Caroline and I headed across the street to Dr. W's office for our 4 month well visit. She was such a happy little camper!! Dr. W said that she is one healthy kiddo!! We get to start on rice cereal anytime now as she is getting so big! He also said that the rice cereal would probably help with the spitting up, so I guess we shall see!! :) Pictures to come soon!! Her stats are as follows:

Weight: 13 lbs. 13.4oz. (50th percentile)
Height: 25 1/4" (90th percentile)
Head Circumference: 16 1/4" (50th percentile)

Now if you had asked me before the appointment how big she was, I would have sworn she was a full pound or two heavier than Katherine was at this point...I was totally wrong! A four months old Katherine was 13lbs. 14 oz (so basically the same), 24 3/4" long (a 1/2" shorter than Caroline) and had a head circumference of 16" (1/4" smaller than Caroline). I was totally shocked! Guess that means both of my girls are going to long and lean!!!

Caroline got two shots and was NOT a happy camper about that! She will go back next week for two additional shots and then we are done until 6 months old! :) She's sleeping peacefully now in her swing! :)

Well here are some of Brittany's pictures! (They aren't the full image as I had to download them from a site, but once I get the real images from her on disk, I can send those out.) :) Hope you enjoy!!

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween from the Hughes Family!!

Katherine and I were sick...ALL of last week. On Thursday we finally felt ok enough to venture out of the house for the first time other than to the doctor's office. So both girls and I headed South to the Vero Outlets on a mission for winter clothes to wear during our trip North to Virginia for Christmas, a Christmas dress for both girls and a dress for Miss Katherine to wear at Caroline's baptism. They have a wonderful Carter's outlet down there that I LOVE. We made out like bandits and even managed to get gifts for a few people. I love getting Christmas shopping checked off of my list! :) Anyway, both girls did WONDERFUL, and we were home by 1pm ready for a nap. Yeah...didn't happen. So Mom was worn out by the time dinnertime rolled around. Katherine missed school again on Friday because she still had a lingering cough. So we stayed close to home and didn't do much of anything.

Saturday morning we decided to head back to the outlets (they are only 45 minutes away) to pick up some gifts that I had forgotten about and to look for some things for my mom and Christopher. So the whole Hughes family packed into the car and headed South. We had a pretty successful shopping trip, grabbed a bite to eat and then headed home. We got home in time for Chris to go get his bike fixed at the local bike shop and then it was time to eat dinner and get ready for church. Yes, we went to church on Saturday and Halloween night! There weren't many people there as the Florida/Georgia game was on TV and it was Halloween night.

After church, we scurried home and did a quick change into Katherine's Halloween outfit. Trick or Treaters were out in full force on our street. We immediately went outside and across the street to Grammie and Gray Gray's house. Katherine LOVED getting candy and showing off her "Cowboy Princess" outfit as she calls it. Such a cutie. Caroline on the other hand wanted NOTHING to do with Halloween. I think she was worn out from our busy day. So after Grandma's house we visited one next door neighbor and then headed back to the house. Chris was handing out candy in the driveway, so Katherine climbed up into the back of the pickup truck and helped Chris while Caroline and I went inside for bedtime. She conked out in no time, so I was able to go back out and join Chris and Katherine. I think the entire street could hear Katherine. She was talking SOOO loudly. She kept saying "Here comes people for candy, Daddy!" As if we couldn't see them! hahaha.

We finally called it a night around 9 and put the little cowgirl to bed. I passed out cold shortly after and awoke at midnight to Chris and Katherine in her bathroom chatting. I had NO idea what was going on as I had been so sound asleep. Well apparently Katherine woke up screaming...I didn't hear a thing...and Chris went in to see what was wrong. Her left little leg was covered in hives?! WHAT?! So, he gave her benedryll immediately (excellent job Daddy!) and once the hives subsided and we got her back in bed, I called the on-call nurse for our pediatrician. Apparently hives are a side effect of a really bad virus...who knew?! Thankfully it wasn't an allergic reaction! So once I finally relaxed enough to fall back asleep it was around 2am.

Chris got up with Katherine Sunday morning and let me sleep until 8:15 (9:15 before the Fall Back). I felt SO much better, but still not batting 100%. We got up and got dressed thinking we were headed to the grocery store, since I hadn't been since the previous weekend...a major no, no with a two year old in the house! hahaha. Anyway, after I got out of the shower and got ready, Chris was feeling tired, so he conked out for a much deserved nap, while Katherine, Grammie and I cleaned out all of my parents' stuff from our garage and moved it across the street. It was quite a project, but the girls did it! :) After we got Katherine down for her afternoon nap, Chris went through the remaining junk left in our garage (all of our junk) and managed to make piles of trash, giveaways, and to be organized. So now our garage looks completely bare! It's wonderful!!! We still have to organize the stuff we are keeping, but it's SO much better than it was! I LOVE IT! While he was working in the garage Caroline and I went to the grocery store for some much needed supplies. I had a pick up a few things for Mom, so when we got back, we all headed across the street to deliver our goodies. Well I guess we had perfect timing, because Mom told us to stay for dinner. We had a WONDERFUL dinner at their house and then headed back across the street for bedtime! We were all conked out by 7:45pm. LOVE IT!

The bad thing is that we were all up by 5:30am this morning...booo. Oh well. Caroline slept for 12 hours straight last night, so I'm feeling pretty darn good this morning!!! :)

Check out the pictures of Katherine and Caroline on Halloween night below.

Our story

So last week when we were going around the room telling how we met/our story at our couples small group, I realized that we have been through quite a lot and God has definitely had His hand on our lives. I am also doing Beth Moore's Esther Bible study right now which is all about how moments that seem completely unrelated to anything, have a huge impact on your life path and story looking back. So I figured I would write down the story of how Chris and I came to be as well as how we ended up here in Melbourne, FL. If you had asked either of us if we would ever live anywhere other than an Army post or Virginia we would have thought you had lost your mind! Ha! So here goes, a lot of you already know this, but for some it may be new. :)

I grew up in Stuarts Draft, VA (the middle of mountain country in the Western part of the state). When I was finishing up 8th grade, my mom received an opportunity to go into management with State Farm in...dun, dun, duh...Richmond, VA. Growing up in Stuarts Draft, all you think of when you hear about Richmond is people getting shot (mainly because that's always on the news). So I was a wee bit nervous moving to this HUGE city (to me). I wanted to be an athletic trainer, so I signed up to do girls basketball. Well in order to do girls basketball, you had to do football because that is when trainers were "trained." :) So, off I went as a 9th grader not knowing a soul to football practice in August. I learned a few faces in the two weeks before school, but I still didn't really know anyone. So on the first Friday of school (4 days into the school year), I noticed that the JV quarterback (Chris) was riding on my bus to school. Now a little background, football was not the best sport at Midlothian but I didn't know that! Also most girls at Midlo used to tease the guys about not winning...again, I didn't know! So I walk up to where he is sitting talking with some other folks and ask "so how did the game go last night?" He looks at me with a snarl and replies "Shut up!" I immediately thought to myself, "Well, he's a jerk!" and made a mental note to avoid talking to him...ever. :) I think that is probably the last time I rode the bus to school as well. I was totally embarrassed.

Well God had other plans. So, throughout football season that year and the next year, Chris kept getting little nagging injuries that required none other than trips to the training room...and me! I still didn't think he was very nice, but I dealt with him. I think my bubbly personality just about drove him nuts. He was also in my 9th grade science class, but he always made snide remarks my way, so I really thought he was just mean! In 10th grade we were in two classes together, Math and P.E. For some reason both of the teachers decided it was their job to get us "together." So in Math she strategically placed us next to each other and when she changed our assigned seats (every 4-6 weeks because we had a talkative class) she always left Chris exactly where he was and moved me around him in a circle. Weird. Our P.E. teacher always found "errands" for us to run to the guidance office or principal's office which required both of us to go...weird. So by the middle of the year we were pretty good friends and by the end of the year we actually like each other somewhat. Over the summer we spent a lot of time at Salisbury Lake just laying around on the beach and talking about nothing in particular. During this whole time we kept insisting that we were just friends. By September of our Junior year we finally decided we were a couple and started dating. We were pretty much inseparable after that. I like to think that we kept each other out of trouble as neither of us were into the party scene. We would go to the movies, the mall or hang out at one of our houses, but we were pretty boring compared to most high schoolers.

Chris left for West Point 10 days after our high school graduation and I waiting all summer before going off to James Madison University for my first year of college. The first year was tough on all fronts as Chris was a Plebe at the Academy, I did not get along with my roommate and I pretty much hated life at JMU. I would drive up to West Point for long weekends whenever Chris had a pass...which wasn't much, and I would go see him in Richmond when he came home for Holidays, but mainly we communicated through AOL Instant Messenger and occasional phone calls. I finally got smart during my sophomore year and applied for transfer admission to UVA. I was accepted into the Business school (no small feat!) and my junior year I moved to Charlottesville. I LOVED my last two years of college, due in large part to finding and joining the Christian choir called Jubilate. Chris's time got a little better at West Point as he was finally an upperclassmen, but overall it was not a "fun" college experience for him. I graduated from UVA on May 18th, 2003 and then headed up to New York for Chris's graduation on May 31, 2003. We jumped into Chris's old Explorer and headed south to Virginia immediately following his graduation. He was DONE with West Point!! :) We were married on June 21, 2003 in Midlothian and after returning from our honeymoon headed West to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Chris was in his Explorer and I was in my little Honda Accord and we drove for three days to finally get to Fort Sill. I was there for 6 weeks of his 6 month Officer Basic Course. After 6 weeks I headed back East by myself...a three day drive...by myself...at 22 years old...that scares the heck out of me now! Didn't phase me at the time! Anyway, we moved into our first house in Fayetteville, NC as soon as I arrived in NC and I started my new job with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Raleigh two weeks after I arrived from OK. We were living in Fayetteville...and I was working in Raleigh...and 1 1/2 - 2 hour commute ONE WAY. I was crazy, but didn't know it at the time. I was working between 60 and 120 hour work weeks, and I was all alone in a town where I knew NO ONE. Talk about intimidating!

Chris graduated from Officer Basic and headed East two weeks before Christmas. He got home and immediately got a call from his new unit at Fort Bragg that he had the "option" to deploy with his unit...leaving on January 6th. WHAT?! He was told that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and that this would be the last deployment to Iraq, so he would be one of the only 2003 grads to get to go...so he went! What a great opportunity right?! He was gone until mid-April. Again, we were back to communicating via e mail and AOL Instant Messenger (usually at 3am North Carolina time). When he came home, I was smack dab in the middle of an audit on a restatement (a big deal in the public company world). So I was working average 100-120 hour work weeks and Chris was driving clothes up to me on the weekends. A sad state!

During the time that I was working so much, Chris was also doing a lot of night jumps with his unit. Well he landed on the cement in the middle of the night one too many times and was now out with a back injury. Almost immediately the doctors said " you're going to be medically discharged." NOW WHAT?! We were planning on going back to West Point for Chris to teach...what do you mean a medical discharge?! Definitely NOT in our plan, but definitely in God's plan. :) A normal discharge takes YEARS to get through all of the bureaucracy...not us. From first mention to complete discharge was about 7 months. We were completely at a loss...what are we going to do now?!

Chris decided he was sick of having bosses, so he called my dad about going into a business with him. Amazingly at this very time, my dad was in the process of purchasing a commercial property as a real estate deal. Well the owner of the property really wanted to "sell" the business with the property. So my dad said "you wanna run an electrical company?" Chris said "uh, I guess so." So we moved to Melbourne, FL in January 2005 and Chris has been running Eau Gallie Electric ever since.

Now, what was I going to do? Well, it just so happens that Mom was going back into Agency at this time and she needed dependable staff people. Hello Keturah. So I walked right into a job with her, and we had SO much fun! I am not a sales person, so I knew this wouldn't be my job forever, but it was great to get me down here and then give me time to figure out what I wanted to do.

A month after we got everything moved in and settled, I went to a new doctor for my routine OB/GYN check up. Well the first question he asks me after my exam was "so are you here for a second opinion?" Uh...NO! Well he found a cyst the size of a grape fruit on my left ovary. (Can we see God's hand in all this...I wouldn't have been at this doctor's office if we hadn't been discharged!) The doctor said he figured it had been there for a few years?! WHAT?! So I was immediately scheduled for surgery the next week. I had no idea going in whether or not I would come out of the surgery with a full hysterectomy or just removal of the cyst. Talk about nerve wracking! The cyst was definitely benign and they only had to remove my left ovary...I could still have children!! With that said, the doctor told me that we should probably start trying to have kids soon because it would probably take us a long time to get pregnant since I only had the one ovary...great. We had planned on not having kids for another 2 years or so... Yeah...it took about a week to get pregnant. I can just imagine God laughing at "doctors" up in Heaven. :) We also found out after my surgery that the doctor I went to just happened to be a specialist in gynecological surgery and was the high risk pregnancy doctor...I couldn't have been in more capable hands. Amazing!

So now, here we are a total of 14 years after our first meeting and we have been blessed with 2 beautiful girls, a thriving business, and a house directly across the street from my parents and within 2 miles of our church. I think that this was definitely part of God's plan for us, even though it is drastically different from the plan that Chris and I had when we first got married. :)

Sick!

So basically in one word the sum of our time since my last post has been SICK. Ugh! After Katherine's rapid recovery in time for school Monday the 5th, we had a rapid decline on Tuesday and Katherine didn't get over that cold until the 14th! A full week! UGH! The poor kid had a fever that just wouldn't go away. We took her to the doctor, but it was just a virus, so we had to just wait it out. Caroline and I did come down with the cold (or crud as I have been referring to it), but luckily it was very mild for both of us, so we didn't slow down for more than a day. :) Chris however got the worst of it. Poor guy. He was in bed for two full days...very unlike him, so you know he was very sick. He halfway recovered enough to head out of town for two days on business. That meant I was at home with both girls...and one had some MAJOR pent up energy since she hadn't been out of the house in over a week! It was an interesting two days to say the least! :) Chris finally came home in time for us to rapidly get ready for Mom's birthday party on Sunday the 18th. I was SO excited to finally use my living room (which we are using as a dining room, since our dining room is my office. :) and my Nana's dining room table! We had a WONDERFUL birthday for "grammy" complete with chocolate chocolate cake...her favorite. :) Sandi, GiG and Joe Joe all came to celebrate. I think it was pretty nice as it is the first time in a while that Mom has not had to cook for her own birthday! Sad I know!

The next week was full of craziness, but luckily no sickness! Whoo hoo...I thought we were in the clear! :) Chris spent two nights doing recruiting for West Point at local college fairs (meaning I was at home with both girls again...it's always interesting when it's 1 vs. 2!). Cory came into town on Thursday morning and Thursday night we had our very first couples small group Bible study. I was SO excited about this. Chris and I really had a good time and we can't wait for the actual study to begin next week!

Then Friday hit...WHAM! So, Katherine went to school, and Cory, Caroline and I ran a few errands around town (I'm talking to Sam's for two things and that's it!). We came home and I tried to get Caroline to take a nap before Katherine was finished with school, so that I could rest...yeah no. Caroline was ready to party!! So we went to pick up Katherine, came home, and the beginnings of a migraine settled on me...ugh. Katherine decided that she didn't want to take a nap...so on went the 3 hour battle of wills before she FINALLY conked out. Oh and then there was Caroline...yeah, she didn't want to go to sleep either...she might miss something, heaven forbid! So I am about to die from the pain in my head and I am running between two screaming kiddos...it was interesting to say the least. Once they both finally went to sleep I collapsed on the bed and found a bandanna to tie around my eyes, because the light from the windows was killing me! I got some sleep and finally managed to take some Motrin (the thought of even drinking water for a while made me want to get sick.), so when I woke up I was feeling MUCH better. Well that was just the beginning...

Saturday Katherine woke up with a fever of 102. Ugh! She didn't have any symptoms other than a fever, so I didn't really think much of it, but by lunchtime her fever was up to 103.5. I called the pediatrician who just said to keep her still (YEAH RIGHT!) and give her Motrin. All weekend her temp ranged between 101 and 103. So Monday morning I called the doctor's and got her in for an appointment that afternoon. The poor little one still had a fever and had a throat so raw, the doctor was sure she had strep. Nope! Both tests came back negative, so we're back to the wonderful viral infection...oh goody! His prescription was rest, Motrin and lots of smoothies since her throat was so inflamed. So that night when Chris got home, we all piled into the car to get smoothies for Katherine's dinner. Not to self: Do NOT give a 2 year old a smoothie in the car...wait until you get home. We had strawberry smoothie ALL over the car seat and Katherine. It was quite hilarious after we got it cleaned up. That night was rough...she was up almost every hour coughing her little head off. Then because she was coughing she would start screaming, because her throat hurt so badly. :( It was pitiful.

Tuesday was more of the same still fever between 101 and 103. I called the doc about the coughing and thankfully he called in a prescription for cough syrup with codeine. We just love our doctor. Dr. W! :) He called twice personally to check on little Katherine. So sweet. Last night was her first night of good sleep in four days. :) She still has a fever this morning, but I think she feels a little bit better since she actually got some rest! :) I'm very disappointed that she is missing her preschool's Fall Festival today, but I'm hoping she will be better by Friday when they have a Halloween party in her class. :) Keeping my fingers crossed!

I'm hoping November is a better month for the Hughes crew! I think we were not sick a total of 9 days this month...that's depressing!

what else is new...we've been busy! :)

Well the past few weeks have been...you guessed it...CRAZY! :) I think one of these days we will actually slow down...maybe take a vacation?! I can't imagine it, but I think it will happen one of these days. :) The weekend after Caroline's 2 month check up I had a Session Retreat at church all morning at Saturday. So Christopher was alone with both girls for 4 1/2 hours! I was a bit nervous about leaving him all alone with the girls for so long, because I KNOW what a handful they can be, but he did amazing! I came home to two happy girls. One was sitting in the stroller just a smiling while daddy pushed her around the house (Caroline) and the other was sitting at the piano with no shirt on playing (Katherine). Daddy didn't even seem tired after keeping up with both girls all morning long...I think we may have to do this again! Ha! :) I was very impressed and it was wonderful being with adults for an entire morning without having to worry about one starting to cry in the middle of the meeting!

Also that weekend we had to make two batches of chocolate chip cookies...one for us and one to take to Katherine's school for her teacher Mrs. Maze's birthday on Monday. Katherine sat on the counter and helped me make the cookies...until she broke a glass right into the dough! AAGGHH! So we scrapped that batch and whipped up another one. This time the chocolate chips melted in the dough! I have never had that happen before! We aren't sure if the chocolate chips got hot from the steam coming out of the dishwasher or if I got the butter to hot when I softened it...I have no clue! They looked very strange, but Chris said they tasted better than normal because they had a fudge-like inside...guess I will have to try and repeat this in the future!

The next week was a bit crazy as I was helping to organize a marriage conference at our church the following weekend. I was at the church every single day that week and it was insane! The conference went off without a hitch and was actually a wonderful weekend. Chris and I attended and had a great time! We actually tied two other couples (one was my parents!) for the longest "courtship/engagement." haha. As the speakers put it "we've got some very cautious folks here!" Katherine and Caroline were in the nursery from 6pm on Friday until 8:30pm and then again on Saturday from 8am - 4pm! They both did great, but boy were we all WORN OUT by Saturday at 4! Our homework from the event was to schedule a date within the next 7 days...well it's been 10 days and we have yet to find time...guess we'll have to work on that! :)

After the wedding conference was over we moved into overdrive on operation "move out." In other words, my parents house was finally completed enough for them to move into! I know they were sick and tired of living in our little guest room. Really operation move out began in earnest the week prior (also during the marriage conference prep time). Dad had construction crews hopping over there all week...and I mean HOPPING! I swear I looked outside of my window and you couldn't even see the house for all the construction vehicles parked everywhere! GOod thing we have a large driveway or there wouldn't have been enough room for all of the cars to park! Monday and Tuesday of the actual moving week were spent finalizing things like the tile in the bathrooms, cabinet boxes in the bathrooms, paint, shutters on the windows (inside), etc. They managed to get 90% of it done in time for move in day on Wednesday. They got almost all of their stuff in the house on Wednesday and left non-essential stuff (books and Christmas mainly) in the storage unit until they can make room for that stuff. It looks like box heaven right now, but they are getting there!

Thursday was spent cleaning and getting ready for CiCi, Gran and Grandad to come and visit! They were en route on Thursday and we weren't sure if we would see them that night or not until Friday morning. We ended up not seeing them until the next morning as they didn't get in until after both girls were asleep. Friday was a day with the family! Katherine went to school in the morning so CiCi, Gran and Grandad were able to get some quality time in with Caroline before the tornado came home from school. :) CiCi and Daddy went to pick her up from school and she was super excited! We went out to lunch on Friday and then came home and took a nap and had a nice dinner in with the whole crew.

Saturday we got up early and made homemade pancakes, sausage, eggs and fruit for breakfast with everyone. Katherine was quite the entertainer. I had a haircut at 11am, so I headed off to do that while the girls stayed and played with CiCi, Gran, Grandad and Daddy. They had a blast. When I got back we all had some lunch while Grandad and Daddy ran to the tire place to get Grandad's tires balanced before the long trek back to VA. Katherine took another nap...yes that is TWO days in ROW!...while CiCi, Gran and I visited and had lunch (she had already eaten). The boys got back just in time for Katherine to wake up and CiCi and Daddy took her to the park! I fixed dinner while Gran and Grandad caught the Twins/Royals game on tv. We had an early dinner so that they could get back to the hotel for a good night of sleep before an early wake up call the next morning. We were sad to see them go. :( It seemed like they just got here! But we had a great visit! :)

After they left, Chris and I headed over to Mom and Dad's house...they were in the garage pulling cable through the house...didn't look good from our vantage point. Dad was pulling cable through the house and making Mom help him...should have just waited until Chris could help, but what's done is done! :) Chris helped dad for a bit while Momma reheated dinner (I brought over what was left from our dinner so she wouldn't have to cook...thank goodness since the Turkey she was cooking was taking quite a bit longer to cook than she anticipated!). Katherine was mesmerized by all of the boxes and furniture in Grammy and GrayGray's house. After they finished eating the Hughes crew called it a night! We were pooped! Oh...and I managed to burn my left hand pretty badly, so I was ready for the night to be over!

Sunday morning Christopher got up and went for a run and came home in time to get Miss Katherine when she woke up, so I got to SLEEP IN until 8:30am! Then, I was just waking up when in walks Christopher with homemade breakfast in BED! WHOO HOO! I had a feast all by myself! He's so sweet! :) I came downstairs and asked Katherine if she helped Daddy make me breakfast her reply "Nope. I ate my grapes." Chris looked at me and said "well at least she's honest!" hahahaha. When Caroline woke up we all took a trip to Walmart for diapers and such and then came home in time for lunch at Mom and Dads with GiGi and Joe Joe. Caroline started getting cranky towards the end, so she and I ducked back across the street while the others watched football and visited. I managed to sneak in a 30 minute nap before Chris and Katherine came back. Then it was naptime for Miss Katherine. I was very excited because when I woke up my hand was just red from the burn...didn't look bad...however by the end of Katherine's naptime I had a big old blister on my left index finer and super red marks on my middle and ring finger...oy. We had dinner at home and called it a night.

Monday was a crazy day. I wasn't sure if Katherine was going to go to school or not because she had a fever all of Saturday and Sunday, so I just KNEW she would still have one on Monday morning...WRONG! So my plans for a "jammies" day was out the window. So I rushed around getting ready and getting Katherine dressed for school. Got dad to come over and watch Caroline while I ran K to school. Then I came home, grabbed Caroline and headed off to the urgent care place close by...Mom was going to flip out if I didn't go to the doctor about my burn. So 30 minutes later I was on my way back home with a prescription antibiotic cream, a tetanus shot in the arm and the verdict of a bad 2 degree burn on my left index finger...oh goody. And by the way...I don't remember tetanus shots hurting so bad! OUCH! Caroline and I came home to get caught up on stuff for the shop and then it was time to head back to school for Katherine's very first parent/teacher conference. I was quite anxious about this as the few things I have seen/heard from school were Katherine running away from her teachers and not walking in line, Katherine bossing the other kids around...etc. Well Chris and I got there and met with Mrs. M and she said that Katherine was SO smart. They wanted to know how much we work with her at home...not too much...just bath and bedtime reading and such. She also said that Katherine is the "mommy" of the class and takes care of everyone else while also making sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to do...in other words when someone is climbing on the table they hear "Mrs. M, Mrs. M, so and so is climbing on the table!" She said that all of the kids just love Katherine and she gets along with everyone. :) Phew! BIG sigh of relief!! The teachers are quite impressed with Katherine's ability to name every animal out there...in fact they play a game to see if they can pull out an animal that Katherine doesn't know...they haven't found one yet. They are also impressed that she knows all of her ABCs and can count to 50! Mrs. J said that her 3 1/2 year old can't even do that! She can count to 25 completely on her own, after that she sometimes misses a couple of numbers, but with a little prompting she gets to 50! I told Christopher she gets the smarts from him and the friends with everyone from me. :)

We came home from the conference and had lunch with Daddy before nap time. Katherine took a nap while allowed me to get some more much needed work done at the shop. While Katherine napped, Christopher won a bid at the shop that he had been working on for a while and GrayGray (my dad) got his braces off...FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!! It was turning out to be a GREAT day on Rio Casa Street! So when Katherine woke up from her nap at 5:30...we all packed up and headed to the Bistro for a celebratory dinner!!! Caroline even managed to sleep the entire time we ate! AMAZING! We came home and it was bedtime for all. :)

I am hoping the next few weeks will be a little calmer, but undoubtedly we will fill the schedule up with something! I don't think we know how to sit still! :)

Katherine is growing up way too fast. She's like a little girl now instead of a baby...:( Where did my baby go?! Caroline is also growing like a weed and should be rolling over really soon. She is such a happy little girl and only cries when she is hungry...which happens to be a lot! ha! She looks more and more like Christopher everyday and I think she is going to have his temperament. She's very content to sit and watch everything that is going on around her. She is the happiest little girl when she wakes up in the mornings...it is so sweet.

Well I guess that all...or should I say I will stop because this is WAY too long! Ha! Next up are my mom's birthday and a visit from Uncle Cory!!! :) Hopefully I can download pictures soon to post. :)

Have a great Tuesday!

We definitely look like Daddy!

So I thought there was no way for anyone to look more like Christopher as an infant than Katherine...I was WRONG! Look at Miss Caroline! Here is a picture of Katherine at 9 weeks and Caroline at 10 weeks...boy do my girls look like their Daddy! :)

Katherine at 9 weeks old...and I thought she and Christopher were twins.

September Craziness

It has been a few weeks since I last wrote...and it has been NUTS. I swear everyday is nuts around here. :) My poor parents are still working on their house and it seems like everyday is a new problem or delay. They are stuck living in our guest room for a little while longer and I know they are ready for their own space! It is a little hectic with four adults, two kids under 3 and three dogs all living under the same roof. We love the family time, but I am sure that my parents are ready for some QUIET. hahaha. A house with two munchkins is anything but quiet!

Katherine is growing like a weed and surprises me every single day with new vocabulary and her memory is astounding. She constantly shocks me with remembering someone or some place everywhere we go. How is a 2 year old that observant?! I think she gets it from her Daddy...because Mommy is clearly not that tuned into her environment. She absolutely LOVES school and adores her teachers Ms. Jessica and Ms. Maze. We talk about them frequently at home and she is so excited on school mornings to get to school and give them a hug. It is very sweet. We have had a few challenges the past few weeks with Miss Katherine's behaviour, but we are working on it and hopefully heading in the right direction. She got in trouble a few times in school for not staying in line when going to the playground and specifically running away from her teachers when asked to go in the room after playtime. AAGGHH! I was completely embarrassed when her teachers told me this, but I totally believed it. She does the same thing with Chris and I. So we have been working on walking and holding our hand everywhere we go. Today when I went to pick her up her teachers said that she did GREAT today! She walked in line and even sat still while in chapel...AMAZING! So we went out to lunch with Daddy as a special treat for such good behaviour! She also got into trouble in the nursery at church one night as she threw a chair down and then would not pick it up when asked. I am hoping that she didn't throw the chair at anyone, but was too scared to actually ask the nursery attendants the question. Some things are better left unknown! :) She also has been having 3-4 hour meltdowns everyday before nap time. Yesterday she got so mad that I was making her take a nap that she took all of her clothes off, sat down in the floor and peed on the carpet. She then looked up at me and said "Mommy clean it up." WHAT?! Needless to say I was not in the best frame of mind. So I quietly cleaned up the mess, put her back to bed and then went into my room and screamed into my pillow for about 20 seconds...amazing how that relieves some stress! :) I then picked up my Bible and read for a while until I was at peace again. Then I went in to talk to her about her behaviour and to tell her she could come downstairs, but she was fast asleep. So today we are attempting no nap...I hope I don't regret this! It is virtually impossible to get her to sleep at night until 9 or 10pm. And she wakes up like clockwork everyday between 6 and 6:30am...definitely NOT enough sleep for a 2 1/2 year old! So my hope is that if I can get her to bed earlier then maybe we can get her to sleep for 12 hours at night and then she doesn't need a nap during the day...and then we can avoid the 3-4 hour meltdowns! Everybody wins right?! I'm praying so! I'll let you know how that turns out. :)

Caroline is growing like a weed as well and was deemed healthy as a horse at her 2 month check up on Monday. She is now 11 pounds 4.8 oz., 24" long and her head is 15 1/4" in circumference. So basically she is in the 90th percentile for length and 50th percentile for weight. We have another long and lean girly! She is such a sweet little girl, but has apparently developed a keen sense of where Mom is. I tried to sneak out of the house the other day to see Mom and Dad's new cabinets across the street while she was conked out in the swing. Mom said that the second I walked out of the door she woke up screaming. The second I came back in and got in her line of site, she was fine again. Oy vey! I didn't think the clingy stage started for a while?! She has also started giving me a fit at night and won't stay asleep when I put her down in the crib. Last night it took 2 1/2 hours to finally get her to stay asleep. I swear her little eyes are spring loaded and the second her head hits a mattress they just pop back open. Other than bedtime though, she is SUCH a good little baby. Most of the day she just babbles to me and smiles. She usually falls asleep on her own for naps and is generally one happy little girl. Now if we could just transfer that to bedtime we'd be all set! :) Up until the past week she has been sleeping at night like a champ. She would sleep 6 hours and then 4 hours, which was GREAT for me. :) However, the past week has been a different story and we have regressed to feedings every 2-3 hours at night. Ugh! I"m hoping this has more to do with a growth spurt than a pattern, but I guess time will tell.

Chris and I are doing pretty well, but staying really busy with the girls and the shop. Chris has a new kayak that he has been going out in a bit and he is loving it. I don't think I'm brave enough yet to try it, but maybe one day! :)

I will post updated pictures in a separate blog, so stay tuned!!!

Pictures updated...FINALLY!

Ok, so I FINALLY am posting some updated pictures of the girls. I have to steal Christopher's camera to get pictures now and then I always forget to download them before he goes to work, so that has caused quite a backlog in the picture sharing world! I will update you guys later this week with what we've been up to, but for now, here are some pictures of the past few weeks. :) Enjoy!!
