Funny stories

So I realized this week that Katherine and Caroline do such funny things during any given day, that I should probably start recording these things so they can read about them someday. I usually post them as a status update on Facebook, which many of my friends get a huge kick out of, but I figured I should start recording them here so that I will have a record of them for a long time to come. So here goes the start of the crazy adventures of Katherine and Caroline!

Katherine and Caroline:
I had to take a Mommy potty break around lunchtime on Thursday of this week. So I finished setting out the baby food (applesauce) for Caroline on the table and put Katherine's lunch there as well. I ran to the potty and came back not 5 minutes later. When I left, the container of applesauce and spoon were on the table and the applesauce was unopened (meaning still sealed). Katherine was enthralled with the latest Barney episode and Caroline was happily playing on the floor with her exercise mat thingy. When I came back, I found Katherine sitting on the floor next to Caroline, feeding Caroline applesauce with the spoon. Katherine was SO proud of herself for "helping" mom and Caroline was grinning ear to ear with applesauce ALL over her face. Caroline LOVES her big sister Katherine. I'm still not sure how Katherine managed to get the seal off of the food, but whatever! At least it was a cleanable mess! :)

Caroline:
Caroline has recently learned how to squeal really high pitched. She thinks this is hilarious and does it quite often just to entertain herself. I was making a phone call to a local florist to place an order when the lady on the other end of the line asks "Is that a bird chirping in the background?" I immediately started laughing and responded "No, that's my 6 month old daughter." The poor lady was totally embarrassed, but I thought it was hysterical, because she does sound like a bird chirping when she gets to squealing!

Katherine:
Today we had been having a terrible battle to get Miss Katherine to take a nap. I had gone upstairs at least 6 times and put her back to bed each time. Finally I am about at my wits end and I'm heading back up the stairs to put her yet again back in the bed, only I can't find her! My first reaction is "Oh no, what has she gotten into now?!" I look in Caroline's room...no luck, my room...no luck. Then I hear this loud exclamation of "YAAAAAYYYY!" followed by clapping. I follow the sound into my bathroom to find Katherine sitting on the potty going potty. (I have been trying to get her to go potty on the potty for quite a while now with mild success, but nothing significant.) I asked he what she was doing and she says "I'm going potty. This will make Mommy happy. Then I go downstairs which will make me happy." Her look said it all...she will gladly use going to the potty to get what she wants. I think we may be in trouble when she gets older! :)

Caroline is 6 months old!!!

Can you believe that our little Caroline is already 6 months old?!?! I can't! She is growing like a weed and just about the happiest little girl around! Her favorite things right now are her feet, squealing with delight, teething rings and her big sister. She just looks at Katherine with such adoration. It is SO cute. We just had her 6 month checkup this morning and she is healthy as a horse!! Dr. W said that she is a perfect little girl and that she has a tad bit of baby eczema, but he's pretty sure that it's due to the severe cold weather we have had lately (more on that in a bit!). Here are her 6 month stats:

Weight: 16lbs. 6oz. 60%
Height: 27" 90%
Head Circumference: 16 3/4" 50%

The amazing thing is that she is one pound heavier and one inch longer than Katherine was at 6 months. I'm thinking we're going to have to super tall, lean girls on our hands!! :) She is still nursing like a champ just about every hour during the day, but she is sleeping on average 12-13 hours straight at night!!! Can you believe that?! I can't. Katherine STILL doesn't sleep all the way through the night. But Katherine does have Caroline beat in one area...EATING! I cannot get little Caroline to eat baby food. She just gets this horrible look on her face, like "Mom, WHAT are you feeding me?! Where's my milk?!" It's actually really funny, but a tad bit frustrating as Katherine would just open up and eat anything you put near her mouth. As they all say, each child is very different! :)

Now...about this cold weather...WHAT IS UP!? We moved to Florida in 2005 to escape the cold winters of the north...yeah, apparently the weather man didn't get that memo the past two weeks. We have not had temperatures this cold in 30+ years in Florida. This morning when I woke up the thermometer read 28 degrees...28, as in not 68, but 28...BELOW FREEZING?! I am ready for my normal sunny 60 degree weather to return pronto! On Saturday morning we actually got SLEET! Katherine's hair is straight due to the cold and dry air and she keeps looking at me and asking if we are back in "Ginia" (Virginia). Ha! Talk about confusing the poor kiddo!

Katherine is back in school and loving every minute of it. This morning she looked at me and said "Mom, it's time for school. Hurry up!" Ha! I'm so glad she enjoys school, as it gives me a little time to get some work done and spend some quality time with Caroline since Katherine had that time when she was little.

Chris and I are pretty boring, we haven't done much since returning from Christmas other than work, work and more work. What's new?! I am hoping that after January, maybe we can carve out some R&R time to just spend as a family with NOTHING on the agenda. :) I can hope right?! :)

Here are two pictures from this past weekend where both girls were bundled up to fend off the very cold temperatures. Enjoy!!

Home Sweet Home!

Well the Hughes family arrived home last night safe and sound around 8:45pm. We were all worn slam out, but very glad to be home. It's so nice to go away and have a change of pace, but it is SO wonderful to come back home. :)

On Friday we did manage to meet up with our friends from way back, the Misiano's. They are so sweet and bring back a lot of memories for both Chris and I. Chris has known them since he was 5 years old! Amazing! After our visit with them, we headed over to Red Robin for lunch and then back to the house for NAPS! :) While the girls napped I attacked the piles and piles of clothes and stuff that needed to all fit back into suitcases for our return journey. Once they woke up, we all headed to Olive Garden for a yummy last dinner in VA. Then it was home and to bed for all of us.

Yesterday morning we got up, got the girls dressed and finished the packing for our flights. We had three large suitcases and all three were very close (if not dead on) the weight limit for the airlines. I was just impressed that we fit the majority of our stuff in the suitcases with just the big presents left to be delivered by CiCi and PaPa sometime soon. We headed off to the airport and managed to get there in time to eat lunch with Cory at Applebee's before rushing off to the gate to get ready to board...yeah...we ended up with an almost hour delay due to equipment problems. It wasn't really that bad as Katherine just RAN up and down the corridor with Christopher close on her heels. While at the gate I heard my name being called...I couldn't imagine who it would be, but lo and behold it was my cousins Rick and Mary and Aunt Helen! Aunt Helen was on our flight back to Orlando and Rick and Mary were there to see her on the plane safely. We visited for quite a while and it was really nice to see them. When we landed in Orlando, we got to see another of my cousins, Rob, who was there to pick up Aunt Helen. Fun stuff!

The girls were AMAZING on the plane. Even after being delayed in the Richmond airport for about an hour, they were so well behaved on the plane. Caroline immediately conked out and Katherine was not far behind her...I'm thinking all the running wore her out! :) Chris and I were able to watch TV in peace while we flew and the girls woke up just as we were landing. Perfect timing!

This time we were smart and flipped the seat belt around backwards so getting the car seat out of the plane was SUPER easy this time around. :) My parents met us at the airport and Tim and Kristen were there as well since Mom and Dad were picking all of us up! We all headed to dinner to grab a quick bite before heading back to Melbourne.

Caroline screamed the entire car ride home from the airport (she's afraid of the dark), but Katherine entertained us with her singing and chatter.

We got home and were greeted by a VERY excited Colby. He had been holding down the fort for us while we were gone. He was extra excited to see us walk in the door. :) Such a sweet boy!

Well I guess that's the end of our Holiday travels. We had such a wonderful Christmas and New Year's but are very glad to be done with the traveling and chaos. Now maybe we can return to a normal schedule and get Caroline back into a better sleeping pattern! Let's hope! :)

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year to you all from The Hughes Family!!! :)

Last night they were all talking about the end of a decade, so I decided to think back over everything that has happened since 2000...man have we had a busy decade! Here is a brief overview of the Corell (since I was a Corell in 2000)/Hughes decade:

2000:
Christopher was a Plebe at West Point and I was a Freshman at James Madison.
My parents moved to Indiana at New Years in 2000.

2001:
I transferred to UVa in August 2001 and joined Jubilate.
Christopher was still at West Point...not much changes for him in these years!
My parents moved to Clearwater, FL.

2002:
I had an internship with PwC in Washington D.C. and was given a job offer in D.C.
We got engaged!!! Labor Day weekend 2002.
Chris went to Italy on CTLT, branched Artillery and posted to Fort Bragg, NC.
I changed my job offer from DC to Raleigh, NC.
My parents moved AGAIN to Melbourne, FL.

2003:
I graduated.
Chris graduated.
We got married!!
Honeymooned in Bermuda, then packed it up and headed West to Fort Sill, OK for Officer Basic Course.
Bought our first house in Fayetteville, NC and I moved in during August to start work in September.
Chris came home from OBC the week before Christmas.

2004:
Chris deployed to Iraq January - April.
I worked myself to death (avg. 100-120 hours per week).
We adopted our "first born" Colby, a yellow lab.
I started looking for a new job and in the Fall we were told that Chris would be medically discharged.
Keturah quit PwC in December and moved to Melbourne, FL.

2005:
Chris and Dad bought Eau Gallie Electric in January.
We sold our Fayetteville house.
Chris was finally discharged from the Army.
We bought a house in Satellite Beach, FL.
I started work for my Mom...then quit and went to work for another accounting firm.

2006:
Rented the Satellite house and bought a house in Viera, FL.
We found out we were pregnant in June!

2007:
I quit working and started doing Chris's books from home.
Katherine was born!!

2008:
We found out we were pregnant with Caroline in October.

2009:
My parents sold their house.
We sold both of our houses and rented a house...directly across the street from my parents!
Caroline was born!!!

Whew! What a decade!!

Here's to hoping that 2010-2019 will be just as great!

Christmas in Virginia

The Sunday after Christmas, the Hughes family packed up and headed North to the very cold Virginia. We flew this year instead of driving as we did last year...let's just say that last year cured us of ever wanting to drive that long in a car with a toddler again...much less a toddler AND an infant! :) So, we hopped on a direct flight from Orlando to Richmond...very nice...I highly recommend it! I was a little worried about how Katherine would do on the flight, but amazingly she was great! We flew Jet Blue, so we had our own TV screen in the seat in front of us and you could control which channel you were watching on your arm rest...Katherine was a pro at changing the channels to find cartoons within minutes of sitting down...she is going to be one tech savvy kid I believe! :) Chris and I also were smart enough to bring Katherine's car seat onto the plane with us so that Katherine was strapped in...in other words, we didn't have to chase her all over the plane...it was a VERY good idea (well until we tried to get the car seat off of the plane...). Caroline was an angel as well, she slept or nursed the whole flight and didn't seem affected at all with the change in altitude. Katherine had a moment of fussiness when her ears were bothering her, but it didn't last long and by the time we landed she was fine and dandy. Once we landed it was time to unload the car seat and drag it back through the airport...yeah...the buckle wouldn't open because there wasn't enough space in the compartment behind the car seat for the buckle to open all the way...great. SO...two pilots, two flight attendants, Christopher and I later the car seat was finally freed... Then we had to drag it and all of our other stuff off the plane and to the baggage claim area.

One thing I have learned is to be VERY patient with parents traveling with young children. This is what we had to carry with us in addition to the three large suitcases that were checked at the ticket gate:
1 stroller
2 car seats
1 car seat base (for Caroline's seat)
1 boppy (for nursing Caroline on the plane)
2 diaper bags full of toys, diapers, change of clothes, etc.
2 children

I think we looked like a rolling train rather than parents with two kids in tow walking through the airport. HA!

Once in Virginia we went to CiCi and PaPa's house for some R&R. Monday morning we had breakfast with the Vails, Youngs and Hughes families and then Chris and I went off to shop at Stoney Point outdoor mall...in 38 degree weather with a windchill of what felt like 0 degrees...what were we thinking?! Needless to say we didn't last long and were shortly back in the car with the heat blasting. :)

Tuesday and Wednesday were spent at the Rivah visiting with the Vails, the Twins and Taylor. The all brought Katherine and Caroline more Christmas presents...boy is she SPOILED!!! She loved visiting with them and they actually gave her her bath, so she was THRILLED about that. :)

Thursday was a lazy day around the Hughes house. The girls and Chris and I went to the mall to look for some jeans, but didn't find what we were looking for. After that we came home and lounged around the house until dinnertime. We have a wonderful dinner by CiCi and then we started the epic 3 hour bedtime battle. Ugh. Katherine finally succumbed at about 2 hours, but Caroline...OH NO...she wanted to party, so I finally got her to sleep around 10:45...I was pooped!

Today looks to be another relaxing day with a visit with friends thrown in there somewhere. Let's hope anyway! :) Tomorrow will be crazy as we return to FL. Our flight is smack dab in the middle of nap time...so I"m hoping they both sleep...but I have a feeling instead they will both be cranky...I'll let you know how it went when we get home!! :)

We're on the plane and ready to go!
